Deregulating land use and reducing traffic congestion will be the major themes of the fourth annual Preserving the American Dream conference. The conference will include a tour of recent transportation and housing projects in the Atlanta area as well as dozens of speakers and workshops on transportation and land-use issues.

The conference will take place in Atlanta's Buckhead district, known as "the jewel of the city." The hotel is a few steps away from Atlanta's regional rail line (which, despite its convenience, actually carried fewer passengers in 2004 than in 1994).

The conference will feature dozens of speakers on a variety of land-use and transportation issues. As shown on the detailed tentative agenda, confirmed speakers to date include:

Robert Bruegmann, author of 'Sprawl: A Compact History' and urban planning historian from the University of Illinois (Chicago);

James Dunn, author of 'Driving Forces: The Auto, Its Enemies, and the Politics of Mobility' and professor of political science at Rutgers University;

Bryce Adam Ward, a researcher at Harvard University specializing in the relationship between land-use regulation and housing affordability;

Les Bunte, assistant fire chief in Austin Texas and author of a report on the effects of traffic calming on emergency service providers;

Robert Poole, Adrian Moore, and Ted Balaker of the Reason Foundation will speak on transportation issues;

Wendell Cox of publicpurpose.com, Sam Staley of the Buckeye Institute, and others will speak on land-use issues.

Workshops will cover such topics as:

• Managing and expanding transportation systems to reduce congestion;

• The link between land use, transportation, and air quality;

• The effects of land-use regulation on housing affordability;

• Eminent domain and tax-increment financing;

• Traffic calming;

• Grassroots organizing.

Registration and Fees

The conference will cost $225 ($150 student/low-income), which includes a buffet dinner on Friday, breakfasts and lunches on Saturday and Sunday, and a Saturday night banquet. The optional tour, which includes a box lunch and transportation, is an additional $25. Fees are refundable if cancellation is received by September 1; after September 1, fees will be refunded on cancellation if someone registers late to fill your space.
