Based on these data, the best way to increase transit ridership is to entice (or force) more jobs into downtown areas. But why increase transit ridership or transit access? As the Antiplanner has previously pointed out, transit isn’t even used by most commuters who live in households without cars, much less those who live in households with cars.

Why, for that matter, does the Accessibility Observatory only observe transit access when transit is irrelevant to all but a tiny proportion of the population of every metro area outside of New York (and, to a lesser degree, Chicago, San Francisco, Washington, Boston, and Philadelphia)? The observatory should prepare a companion report showing the number of jobs within 30 minutes of every point by auto. For most metropolitan areas, however, it is likely that almost the entire map would be the color of whatever was the number of jobs in that metro area. If so, then the real lesson is that increasing job accessibility means increasing access to autos.

    I would say that the real lesson is that a polycentric city needs a polycentric bus network, rather than a monocentric one. Another lesson is that with the larger distances in the USA that there needs to be better ways to access the bus network (bicycles?) and a faster service, more akin to the journey times that car would get.
