I’m Leaving on a Jet Plane

If you are reading this on Friday, I am on a plane to Sydney, Australia, where I will speak on Monday at the Residential Markets Outlook Summit. I suspect when the conference was organized that they had no idea how dim the outlook would be at this time, so they asked me to talk about the wonders of planning in Portland.

On Tuesday, April 1, I will speak at the Sydney Mechanics School at 1 pm about how the “planning tax” made housing unaffordable and contributed to the current dim outlook for residential markets. Australian homebuilders, if not the rest of the country, are familiar with that, as the nation has been practicing smart growth for years and has some of the least affordable housing in the world. In any case, if you are in Sydney, please come and see me there.

Back in the Air Again

The Antiplanner will be speaking in Golden, Colorado tonight at the Independence Institute. I’ll be presenting an updated version of my analysis of rail transit’s impact on energy consumption and greenhouse gases. I’ll be joined by Jessica Corry, who will talk about eminent domain issues involving transit in the Denver area. The reception begins at 5:30 and our presentations begin at 6 pm.

Tomorrow, the Antiplanner will be in Bismarck, North Dakota, speaking about smart growth on behalf of the North Dakota Policy Center. The session begins at 7 am at the Best Western Doublewood Inn.

Anyway, if you are in the Denver or Bismarck areas, I hope to see you at one of these events.

Happy New Year

And happy anniversary, this being one year since the Antiplanner’s first post. I would like to extend my best wishes for 2008 to Jim Karlock, Aynrandgirl, John Galt, and all my other faithful allies, as well as to DanS, D4P, MSetty, and all my other loyal opponents who have worked so hard to keep me honest. It has been good to have all of you join me for past year’s investigations into the trials and tribulations of government planning.

The Antiplanner’s best friend, Chip, wishes you a Woofy New Year.

When I began this blog, I promised to “post to this blog at least five days a week.” I pretty much kept that promise (I missed March 1st because I misdated a post March 2 that was supposed to be for March 1). But this has been hard work. Because I like to thoroughly research and document the issues I discuss, many posts take several hours to write.

For 2008, I promise to write several posts a week, but not necessarily a post every weekday. I am going to try to cover some new issues — light rail and Portland are easy targets, but attacking them is getting repetitious. And more of my posts might be shorter, more blog-like, rather than the op-ed lengths that I usually produce. Nevertheless, I hope this blog will remain as entertaining and thought-provoking as ever.

These Are a Few of My Favorite Trains

Merry Christmas or whatever holiday you celebrate this time of year. If you like railroads, my Christmas present to you is some photos of my favorite trains.

One of the little ironies of the transportation debates is that many rail skeptics, such as the Reason Foundation’s Robert Poole, Wendell Cox, and myself, are actually rail nuts in our private lives, so today’s post will document the Antiplanner’s long-time obsession with passenger trains. Unless otherwise noted, all photos were taken by the Antiplanner. Click on any photo for a larger view.

Of the literally thousands of pre-digital photos I have taken of trains, this is my favorite. The SP&S 700, the nation’s second-most powerful operating steam locomotive, is rounding a corner near Hope, Idaho, on its way home from Billings, Montana in 2002.

Road Trip Next Week

Or, more accurately, air trip. Next Tuesday, October 23, the Antiplanner will be in New York City speaking at a seminar described in the ad below. As you can see, the Antiplanner gets top billing, followed by some guy named Steve Forbes.

It is easy to understand why the Antiplanner would be billed higher than Forbes. After all, it is not as if he were Steve Jobs. Or even Fake Steve Jobs. Although, as it turns out, Fake Steve Jobs works for Steve Forbes. Go figure.

We’re Number 56

There must not be very many architecture blogs out there, because International Listings (a real-estate service) included the Antiplanner in a list of the top 100 architecture blogs. I never thought of this blog as being about architecture, but it is in the sense that too much of what planners do is influenced by some nutty architect. International Listings describes this blog as “critiques of hundreds of development plans written by a wide variety of federal, state, and local government agencies.”

We’re included as a “niche blog” along with such blogs as the Activist Architect (who believes it is okay to raise sales taxes to build rail transit but not to build sports stadiums) and The Architecture of Fear, which is trying to “create a relevant architectural theory on how we live our lives under the unconscious umbrella of fear and danger.” Hey, I have a message for architects: not everything is about you.
