Preserving the American/Australian/New Zealand/Universal Dream

As long as I am in Australia, I should plug the Preserving the American Dream conference, which will take place just under eight weeks from now in Houston. We have an incredible line up of around four dozen speakers covering everything from ballot-box zoning to the reconstruction of New Orleans.

Anyone concerned about property rights, growth management, zoning, traffic congestion, or the high cost of rail transit should attend. You will especially want to go on the Friday tour of Houston, where you will see the local light-rail line, controversies over high-rises in neighborhoods of single-family homes, and Sienna Plantation, a beautiful and affordable privately planned community in Houston’s suburbs.

Friday evening we have invited two proponents of planning and rail transit, Houston Council Member Peter Brown and Gulf Coast Institute director David Crossley, to present their views on Houston’s future. In contrast we will have local opponents of land-use regulation and rail transit in what should be a civilized discussion of the merits and problems with these ideas.

The heart of the conference will be Saturday, when we will give more than thirty speakers the chance to present their recent research on planning, zoning, congestion, property rights, and other issues. Plus we will save some of the best speakers for Sunday morning. In addition to numerous American experts, we expect to have at least one speaker each from Australia, New Zealand, and France.

If you live in the Houston area and cannot attend the entire conference, contact the American Dream Coalition’s assistant director, Kathleen Calongne, for information on prorated rates to attend part of the conference. If you are from out of town, I hope you can attend the entire program, as it will all be worthwhile. I look forward to seeing you there.

Probably the best definition of the “American Dream” is to have every thing you want right now and have some one else pay for it or “hyper instant gratification”.
