Transit ridership is supposedly up, so naturally Denver’s Regional Transit District is eliminating 10 transit routes, including one light-rail route and several express bus routes. This bold move will cover less than 20 percent of the agency’s $23 million gap in its budget, suggesting Denver transit riders can expect lots more route cuts in the near future.
Meanwhile, RTD board members are letting taxpayers pay for their trips to China, $329 per night beachfront hotel rooms, and $70 dinners (unsupported by receipts). Due to declining sales tax revenues, the agency has imposed salary freezes on staff — except, of course, General Manager Cal Marsella, whose contract probably makes him the highest-paid public official in the state of Colorado.

This is what happens when government decides the way to solve problems is to throw money at them. A few people ride high on the hog, and when the money runs out, the problem is still there.

Public schools are a fine example.
Is that sarcasm, Frank?
t g,
I think Frank was talking about the public schools system. They failedto teach adequate critical thinking skills, thus many failed to complain that BushCo throwing money at privatizing the Eye-rack war wasn’t such a good idea, and it didn’t solve the problem. In fact, The Market forced Blackwater to change its name, after the Failure of The Free Market to expedite the invasion.

Well of course, Dan, all those public school teachers failed to teach critical thinking skillz because they were too busy planning their vacations on the tax payer’s dime. Vacations to all those exotic locales which a public school teacher’s salary can afford.
I can’t say this is right, but you’re turning it into a private vs. public debate. I’ve heard plenty of wrongdoings by the “private” banks who got huge bailouts and are still riding around in their private jets.
Sorry this post is on topic, but it seems the local government is trying to aggravate as many people (voters)as possible. Then when the riders complain they will say it’s because they not taxed enough. Or the government is trying to gin up support for the current raid on the treasury.
