Back on the Road Again

I am on the road this week. This doesn’t mean I won’t be posting, but it does mean I will have a chance to meet with any fellow antiplanners who are in Denver and Houston.

On Tuesday, April 17, I will be speaking at 7 pm at the Independence Institute in Golden. The topic of my speech (selected by Independence Institute director Jon Caldara) is “I told you so.” He expects me to gloat about the fact that the FasTracks rail project that we unsuccessfully opposed in 2004 is now $1.8 billion over budget and has a $1 billion revenue shortfall.

It is true that I did predict that FasTracks would not be built on budget and my analysis of the project’s financial plan showed that it was overly optimistic about tax revenues — both points being hotly denied at the time by the region’s rail advocates. But I am not sure I can really gloat about it — after all, they’re going to build it anyway.

In any case, a reception begins at 6 pm at the Institute’s office at 13952 Denver West Parkway #400, Golden, CO 80401. If you are interested in attending, please RSVP. There is a small charge for non-members of the Institute (but if you live in Colorado, you ought to be a member).

On Friday, April 20, I’ll be speaking at a noon luncheon sponsored by the Houston Property Rights Association at the Courtyard on St. James Place, 1885 Saint James Place. I’ll be talking about the very bad idea proposed by some people to write a General Plan for Houston, which could be an irreversible slide down the slippery slope towards zoning, smart growth, and unaffordable housing.

To RSVP for the luncheon, e-mail Barry Klein or call 713-224-4144 by noon on Thursday, April 19th. There is a $20 charge for lunch.

If you live in Denver or Houston, I hope to see you at one of these events. Otherwise, I look forward to your comments on this week’s posts.

JK: What is the news here?
Isn’t this pretty much standard in the rail huckster industry? (See the movie: The Music Man for background info)

Do we have a master list of these over-runs somewhere?

    Thanks
    JK
