Census Shows People Fleeing New York, California

Large numbers of Americans migrated away from heavily urbanized states last year, but the nation’s overall population grew by only 0.1 percent, according to data released by the Census Bureau early this week. Not only was this was the lowest rate of population growth in the nation’s history, “17 states and the District of Columbia lost population,” said the bureau.

Some of those population losses were quite large. According to this Census Bureau table, between July 1, 2020 and July 1, 2021, New York lost more than 319,000 people, or 1.6 percent of its residents. California lost nearly 262,000 people, or 0.7 percent of its residents. DC’s population dropped by 2.9 percent; Illinois’ by 0.9 percent; and Hawaii’s by 0.7 percent. Other states that lost population included Massachusetts, Maryland, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.

The fastest-growing states were Idaho (2.9%), Utah (1.7%), Montana (1.7%), Arizona (1.4%), and South Carolina (1.2%). Numerically, the fastest-growing states were Texas (+310,000 residents), Florida (211,000), Arizona (98,000), North Carolina (94,000), and Georgia (74,000). (All these numbers are rounded off as they are only estimates.)

When only interstate migrations are counted, the South was the only region that grew. The West, for example, gained 36,000 residents, but the region gained 38,000 international immigrants and 143,000 due to “natural increase” (births outnumbering deaths). Counting only interstate migrations, the West lost 145,000 people, almost all of which was in California.

According to this table, 353,000 more Americans moved out of California to some other state than moved into California from some other state. The only other western states that had net negative domestic migration were Hawaii (-11,500) and New Mexico (-700).

Other states losing significant numbers of people were New York (-334,000), Illinois (-117,000), Massachusetts (-33,500), Louisiana (-27,600), DC (-22,000), New Jersey (-17,800), and Maryland (-13,000). Florida gained nearly 260,000 internal migrants, Texas 197,000, Arizona 98,000, and North Carolina 95,000.

These results are consistent with the idea that people are leaving big, dense cities for smaller towns and less-densely-populated areas. There were a few exceptions: Louisiana and New Mexico lost population despite having large rural areas, possibly because both states, like Hawaii, are heavily dependent on the tourism industry.

Meanwhile, the populations of urban states such as Colorado, Connecticut, and Washington grew, but that could be because people thought of them as safe places to flee to from California and New York City or because the growth didn’t take place in cities such as Denver, New Haven, and Seattle. We’ll know more about that when the Census Bureau publishes county and city population estimates.

Thank you for the link, Mr. O’Toole. My guess is that NM lost population mostly due to the reduction in oil rigs. I’ve been pricing real estate in southern NM and in Midland/Odessa, TX and have found stagnant real estate prices in both areas compared to the bigger cities is both states.
