This is not really about antiplanning, but as a rail fan I am offended by this story about Amtrak weather delays. Far be it from the Antiplanner to defend Amtrak, but the NBC News reporter who wrote it just has his facts wrong.
He says the California Zephyr arrived in Chicago “almost 24 hours late” after a journey of “nearly five days” from Sacramento. “Almost 24 hours” turns out to be 19 hours, but the train normally takes less than 50 hours to go from Sacramento to Chicago, so how could the trip have taken five days?
Then the story adds that “another” train from Denver was 23 hours late. But the train from Denver is also the California Zephyr, so this was either the same train as the one that was 19 hours late or was the day before. Why mention “Denver” or “Sacramento” at all when the California Zephyr begins in Oakland?

The pre-Amtrak California Zephyr in Colorado.
The intrepid reporter notes that most of the passengers on board the Sacramento train “say they will never take Amtrak again.” They are blaming Amtrak for the bad weather? Do they vow never to fly again if their plane is delayed by weather? Do they vow never to drive again if they get stuck in the snow? Or is the reporter just exaggerating?
It is amazing how modern people think they should be immune from the weather. Who would think you should be able to cross the country in January without weather affecting your travel?
With such fascinating and accurate stories such as these, one shouldn’t wonder why mainstream journalism aimed at consumers is struggling.
Of all people, why the hell are you offended?
You should be congratulating NBC for doing the exact same type of “reporting” that you do.
I have no problem if you guys want to drive all the time, but don’t threaten people that don’t want to drive all the time.
Amtrak should just tell their passengers about the namesake of “Donner Pass”, so at least the passengers won’t complain about the food or smell.
