The Antiplanner wishes everyone an enjoyable holiday.
It would be nice to live in a free country where the government doesn’t spy on its own citizens, lie about it, and then try to prosecute the person who caught them in the lie.
It would be nice to live in a responsible country where people tried to find the best solutions to problems rather than use those problems as a way of promoting their preconceived agendas.

It would be nice to live in a tolerant country where mobility, homeownership, private property rights, and wealth creation were celebrated rather than demonized.
We don’t live quite in that country, but I encourage everyone to use Independence Day to resolve to make our country that way. Best wishes for the rest of the year.
Amen, Randal.
To everyone, let’s be safe when having fun with fireworks, if you choose to shoot some off. I’ve never done it myself, preferring to watch the professional shows when they are available, but I know our neighbors on the south side of the Puget Sound area will be showing off a whole variety tomorrow night.
It is indeed nice to live in such a country. Happy 4th from Switzerland.
We can celebrate the birthday of this corporation we call the United States of America. When lawyers, slave owners, and bankers thought all men were created equal. When these lawyers, slave owners, and bankers were disatisfied with the business conditions offered by the United Kingdom incorporated and wanted to more favorable terms to the Virginia company.
fireworks cause global warming
Good joke, Frank.
But. be careful, as the people in charge will take you seriously and ban them next year.
Fireworks hurt people and property. (Notice Seattle mention.) My neighborhood was invaded by terrorists setting off explosions last night.
“We don’t live quite in that country…”
If you look at our history I would argue we’ve been moving in the right direction on the aspects you mention above, even if it is a slow process. Sure, some ultra heterogeneous western European countries have some things figured out (not as much as they think), but a country as diverse as America is bound to have some problems. All in all, I would rather live here than anywhere else on the planet and I’m proud of how my country has progressed over the last 2+ centuries.
Just remember that sometimes the ends don’t justify the means. Demons aren’t created out of thin air. Most people aren’t against wealth creation, they’re are against the creation of wealth when it is void of ethics. Markets have failures. Individuals that lie, cheat and steal should be held accountable as should our elected officials and government administrators.
As for privacy, I’m glad to see conservatives finally get on the bandwagon. Us civilly disobedient hippies have been put on lists, labeled terrorists and audited (because of our politics) for as long as I can remember. It sucks, and the only thing good that has come out of it happening to conservative groups is there is starting to be some consensus on this issue.
You libertarians are going to have to rally the fundamentalist wackodoo’s on the right though, because they won’t look “us” in the eye. We’ll take care of the occupy folks, join forces and take big brother to task.

I think that’s right. Lots of focus in some places – a la What’s the Matter With Kansas?
A galvanizing event – if we don’t get distracted by the Snowden distraction.

Happy Independence Day! Here is what happens when you live in a despotic corrupt city:
