Fighting the Hackers

This web site was infected with some type of virus a few days ago. I’ll try to fix it today; in the meantime, comments and other features may not work. I hope to have more posts Monday.

Again? Highwayman, stop messing with the blog, are you trying to post some fake Koch brother admissions or something?

It’s a conspiracy by the streetcar and subway railcar manufacturers and the unions that represent mass transit employees!

    bennett Reply:

You’re giving a lot of credit to the technological sophistication of these unions.

    Frank Reply:

Hacking a blog doesn’t take much. Make sure to check permissions and reset if necessary. Also, indexing may have been compromised as searching for “highwayman site:ti.org/antiplanner” results in only 3 pages, and we all know he’s spammed the blog more than three times.

THWM: I would actually be surprised if they defended their business interests.

Railroads need to be treated the same way as roads by government.

    JK: You bettccha!!
road users pay OVER 100% of their costs and subsidize transit so undesirable that the users refuse to even pay the actual cost.

Here we go again Karlock with you conveniently ignoring property taxes and that roads predate automobiles by thousands of years.

    Frank Reply:

Since 90%+ of households drive, and the remaining households use roads for delivery of goods and services, including police and fire; for transport via taxicabs, buses, etc.; for pedestrians, on sidewalks and crosswalks. Therefore, property taxes for local roads are more akin to a user fee than a subsidy. In terms of highways, Mr. Karlock is absolutely correct; autos pay more than their fare share, and transit and rail are heavily subsidized. Not sure you can open a PDF, but try looking at Figure 2 and rub those two brain cells of yours together to try to figure it out.

There’s a huge politically loaded deck against rail, though I’ve been aware of that for years.

I don’t expect the street in front of my house to make money, just as I don’t expect sidewalks, bike paths, storm drains or city parks to make money either.

Frank, I don’t know why libertarians want to put guns to peoples heads and rape them?

Libertarians want rights, but no responsibilities.

Libertarians want to get paid, but they don’t want to do any work.

    the highwayman Reply:

Frank, you just moved the deck chairs around.

    metrosucks Reply:

Frank, that’s some excellent work! Takes a sharp mind to put two and two together like that, that’s coming from a guy who “fancies” himself pretty good with google searches, when need be. Hopefully this will cause highwayman to tone it down about ten notches, or maybe just go away altogether.

We never got together last time, but if you live in Seattle (I forgot), I’ll happily buy you a beer somewhere in town.

    metrosucks Reply:

Coffee it is. I’m going to be out of town for a week, so some time after the 28th. How do I get a hold of you?

    Frank Reply:

Email Mr. O’Toole; I’ve authorized him to give you the email address I provided when registering to comment here.

    Frank Reply:

I noticed the problems last night after the highwayman spammed the comments section again. I know correlation doesn’t prove causation, but can we please be free of the spamming chat bot?

You must spend a lot of time watch Fox News.

Ah, the Fox News card. Always a sharp arrow in the debate quiver.

Honestly guys, I was just kidding about highwayman. Though who knows, I suppose.

    the highwayman Reply:

No clue who is hacking, though it’s not me.

Finally fixed the problem. I don’t think the virus, or whatever it was, was affecting the blog at all. From some of the files I erased, I suspect it was sending out emails advertising cheap prescription drugs.

All I know is my server was complaining that I was using too much processor time and the wp-content folder was being loaded up with new “cache” files every minute.

I ended up having to erase the entire WordPress installation and reinstalling it. It seems to work and no more cache files.

    Frank Reply:

RSS seems to be down or delayed.

  4. the highwayman

Frank, even O’Toole has said that roads are there regardless of economic conditions.

    That’s not free market capitalism, that’s socialism/communism.

  5. the highwayman

Frank, since O’Toole’s blog/occupation is based paradox and hypocrisy.

Then I’ll leave you with this quote.

“You can avoid reality, but you cannot avoid the consequences of avoiding reality.” – Ayn Rand

Frank said: “But that doesn’t excuse his defamatory statements and verbal attacks on Mr. O’Toole and others commenters on this blog, which need to stop immediately.”

Tis the bane of the blogosphere. There is a thin blurry line that the highwayman crosses every day. Dan crosses it every month. metrosucks crosses it as much as anybody. I cross it too (on occasion). The problem is if Mr. O’Toole were to enforce the rules and block the highwayman, then there are many others he would have to block, many of whom provide good substantive comments. My point being that highwayman is something y’all need to learn to live with (or better yet, IGNORE).

p.s. “Your” side has it’s highwayman too. We’re just better at ignoring him that you are.

    bennett Reply:

    ^ than not “that.”

    metrosucks Reply:

Bennett, I hope you don’t mean that *I* am “our” side’s highwayman. Yes, I do cross that line here and there, but I’m not trying to be a pest; I just blow my top at some of the stuff that’s said. That’s all.

I, and surely most of the rest of us, value your contributions here, and I can’t ever remember a time when you crossed any lines.

    Frank Reply:

“There is a thin blurry line that the highwayman crosses every day. Dan crosses it every month. metrosucks crosses it as much as anybody. I cross it too (on occasion).”

With name-calling and personal attacks perhaps, but not with defamation; that line is very clear, and I don’t see any commenters crossing it except one.

At any rate, were the tools available to ignore, such as filters or a block/ignore feature, ignoring would be possible, but absent those, one must sort through one’s RSS feed or scroll through comments. It’s like being at a party and being unable to walk away from a belligerent drunk; it’s like having on headphones that can’t be removed.

As for crossing the line regarding name calling and personal attacks, I too am certainly occasionally guilty and apologize for doing so.

    bennett Reply:

RE: Defamation. I’m a little unclear when and how this is happening. It could be that my ignoring skills are far superior to yours ;) because as soon as I see “highwayman” I feel like I know what is written before I read it (so I don’t). Was there something he has said that explicitly defames Mr. O’Toole or another commenter?

I also don’t have too much of a problem with personal attacks as long as there is some wit and gusto. It get heated sometimes and that’s kind of fun. I don’t know if I would participate if I couldn’t throw my opponents and Ayn Rand under the subsidized bus from time to time. But as soon as Godwin’s Law comes into play or somebody reverts to calling someone else “stupid boy” all the fun is over.

    Frank Reply:

“It could be that my ignoring skills are far superior to yours”. Probably so; mine waxed and waned. As for examples, there are plenty, but thanks to the hackers(?), Google is no longer completely reporting results from the Antiplanner site, so I’ve had to stoop to using Yahoo! search. Here’s just one example, and another, of many, many, many more.

(BTW, what do you suppose ever happened to Scott, blacquejacqueshellac, D4P, t g, Mike, Andy Stahl, Borealis, ws, and prk166? Could it be that trolling caused them to stop reading/commenting on the AP?)

Anyway, this is the last I have to say on this. Have a good day :)

    Sandy Teal Reply:

There is a price to pay for not weeding out trolls. Opposing views are interesting, stupid troll comments just make a website boring.

    You are, what you are.

Roads don’t have to make money, that is just our political reality.

I’m not against roads, though you chose to be against railroads.
